Holiday Lipstick Inspiration

Still trying to decide what lipstick to wear to you holiday celebrations this winter? It’s cool, I’ve got your back. Here are a few of my top picks to add the finishing touches to your holiday looks.

Marc Jacobs Le Marc Lip Creme in Slow Burn

Never doubt the power of a neutral lipstick… especially if you’re going to be eating a lot and don’t want that awkward ring of color around your lips. A neutral will fade a lot more gracefully, be easier to touch up, and goes great with a smoky eye or glitter.

Smashbox Be Legendary Lipstick in Dirty

This is a great neutral option for medium to deep skin tones. On lighter skin, more of the red will show up, making it a way to be festive and classic without the commitment of a bold red.

NYX Intense Butter Gloss in Cherry Custard

This glossy red is to die for. As I mentioned in my Unconventional Lip Colors blog post, brightly colored glosses are a bit of a risk because it’s a lot more noticeable if they start to slide outside of your lip line. The NYX Intense Butter Glosses actually do a pretty good job of staying put, but I would still advice against going with a bright gloss if you’re not going to be willing or able to check your makeup throughout the event. If you can do that (and it’s not windy) then definitely consider a gloss. This one in particular photographs SO BEAUTIFULLY.

Ofra Liquid Lipstick in Santa Ana

Berries are such a lovely option this time of year. I especially love this tone on people with green or brown eyes. SO flattering and romantic. Plus it’s a festive alternative to red, which can feel a little too classic sometimes. Ofra makes my favorite liquid lipstick formula, so I’ve included several of them on this list. I like Ofra the best because it feels the most comfortable on my lips, yet it still lasts a really long time. It doesn’t feel dry, cakey, or cracked because it doesn’t dry down completely, only to about 90%. This is enough to keep it from feeling too creamy and it causes minimal transfer.

Ofra Liquid Lipstick in Venice

If you’re wanting classic, but with a twist opt for a red with an orange undertone instead of the classic blue. This is also a great option for people who feel like red lipstick doesn’t suit them, people with an olive undertone, and people who will be celebrating the holidays in a warmer climate (shout out to the southern hemisphere!). The orange will give off a more laid back vibe than the traditional blue red, making it feel less out of place at a New Year’s Eve party in the middle of the summer.

Urban Decay Vice Lipstick in Bang

Bang is very, very similar to Ofra’s Venice but with a cream finish instead of a matte finish. I wanted to provide an alternative for those of you who don’t like matte lipsticks. All of the qualities I listed for Venice apply to Bang, so I won’t repeat myself. This one isn’t as longwearing as Venice since it’s not a liquid lipstick, but it does create a nice stain that will cause it to fade gradually throughout the night.

Urban Decay Vice Lipstick in F-Bomb

This is the red to end all reds. Nothing is more classic than Urban Decay F-Bomb. If you’re going for a Hollywood starlet look, this is the lipstick you want. It’s an attention-grabber for sure. Because it’s a classic, there not much for me to add about this one except to let you know that it also creates a stain that will fade gradually throughout the party.

Longwearing? Kinda.

Ofra Liquid Lipstick in Atlantic City

If you want your red lipstick to be matte and/or last all night, go with Atlantic City. This is also a little less bold and a little less blue than F-Bomb, which some people may find suits their complexion better.

Urban Decay Vice Lipstick in Anarchy + Big Bang

It might not look like it, but this is one of the most longwearing lipsticks on this list. Anarchy stains just as much, if not more, than most reds. A bold pink like this one, especially with the added glitter from Big Bang is such a fun, youthful party look. It’s also a little unexpected among the sea of reds and berries. Anarchy is for the rebels. Pair this with a simple cat eye and celebrate how chic you look. It’s actually very likely that this is the lipstick combo I’m going to wearing when I ring in the new year (and it won’t be the first time!), unless Santa brings me something I just can’t resist.

NYX Liquid Suede in Pink Lust

Pink Lust is a matte alternative AND a budget-friendly alternative to Anarchy from Urban Decay. They’re not exact dupes, but very close. The main color difference is that Anarchy’s base is a little more pink than Pink Lust, which is a little more white. For this reason, I would steer anyone with an olive undertone or deep skin toward Anarchy. It’s more expensive, but it’s going to clash less with your skin tone.

NYX Liquid Suede Pink Lust + Urban Decay Vice Lipstick in Big Bang

This is for those of us who love glitter, or those of you who use the holiday season as an excuse to wear glitter when you otherwise wouldn’t. Consider adding a glittery lipstick or a bit of shimmery eye shadow over your lipstick to add some sparkle. I didn’t include it in this post because the shade I have doesn’t really suit any of these lipsticks, but the Urban Decay Vice Special Effects Long-Lasting Water-Resistant Lip Topcoat is an incredible option for holiday parties because it adds sparkle while also helping to extend the wear time of your lipstick. Definitely consider picking up one or two of those if you’re interested in adding some sparkle.

Urban Decay Vice Lipstick in Wrath

Finally, one more red to round out the bunch. This is another one with a twist, this time in the form of a metallic finish. It’s enough of a departure from the classic red lip that it shows more of your personal style, but not so much of a departure that it feels out of season.

Whatever you choose to wear, I hope you have a safe and happy holiday season!

Thanks for reading!
