If you’ve been paying any attention to beauty trends, you’ll know gloss is making a comeback. However, the sticky, gloopy glosses of the past are long gone, replaced by silky, plush glosses that won’t make you feel like you’ve smeared pancake syrup all over your lips. Today we’ll be discussing one of the great gloss options on the market, Julep So Plush Ultra-Hydrating Lip Gloss in the shade ‘Boss.’

Julep describes Boss as a “ripe papaya creme,” which I would say is very fitting. Although it appears to be a bright orange in the tube, it actually has a hint of pink, and is a much softer shade of orange than it appears to be. It’s vibrant, but not neon. It’s also sheer enough to make it an easy to wear gloss, but not so sheer that it doesn’t leave any color on your lips. I think this will be a great balance for most people, but if you’re looking for a gloss that’s completely opaque, try any of NYX’s Intense Butter Glosses.
As I mentioned previously, this gloss isn’t sticky at all. Instead, it’s soft, slippery, and plush on the lips, more like a thick, yet light as air layer of lip balm. It’s very comfortable to wear, and doesn’t slip around too much throughout the day. As the name implies, this is a hydrating lip gloss. As is typical of glosses, it’s not long-wearing, though the wear time is decent. The gloss was still present on my lips after 4 hours (without food) but by that point most of the color had worn away. To keep the color vibrant, I’d suggest reapplying every 3 hours. If the color being faded doesn’t bother you, you’ll probably be able to go about 4 hours between touch-ups.
I really enjoy the scent of the gloss, but I know not everyone is going to feel the same way. It has a noticeable apricot or peach scent that doesn’t smell overly fake or chemically, which I really appreciate. Be forewarned that it is a very sweet, fruity scent and that you will definitely notice that when you’re applying this lip gloss, so if that’s something that bothers you, this may not be a good fit for you. I couldn’t smell the gloss at all after I finished applying it.
The gloss is packaged in a clear, square acrylic tube with a gunmetal cap. The applicator is flocked like a standard doe foot applicator, but it has a unique shape that I’ve never seen before. It’s a rounded hourglass shape with a slanted tip. The hourglass shape helps to pick up product, while the slanted tip makes it easy to smooth the gloss out. I’ll admit, I was a little thrown off by it at first, but now that I’ve gotten used to it, I do like it.
Overall, I recommend giving Julep’s So Plush Lip Gloss a try if you’re looking for something hydrating, tinted, and non-sticky.
