I’ll admit it: I’m a bit of a snob when it comes to brands like Avon. I just don’t feel connected to the brand in the same way that I do brands I see every day in Sephora and Ulta, and I haven’t been impressed by the Avon products I’ve tried in the past. However, I’m happy to report that the Avon True Color Super Extend Nourishing Mascara is an exception. In fact, I’d even call it a hidden gem that I highly recommend you get your hands on if you have watery eyes like I do. At only $8, it’s definitely a great budget-friendly option too!

The Avon True Color Super Extend Nourishing Mascara has a rubber bristle wand with a flexible neck that makes it easy to coat each lash. The bristles comb through and separate the lashes without applying too much product, which is a common complaint about rubber bristle wands. It’s also buildable without being clumpy, though I’m usually happy with just one coat. There’s no scent to this mascara, so it’s safe for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers. It also contains argan oil and coconut oil to help condition the lashes. When I first read that, I totally thought the oils were going to make the mascara slide off, but thankfully it stays on my lashes all day without fail! It’s a fairly wet formula, comparable to the Urban Decay Perversion or Smashbox X-Rated.
I try to keep an open mind when it comes to cosmetics, because you never know what might surprise you. I’m so glad I tried this mascara. It lengthens and separates my lashes, lasts all day, doesn’t flake, doesn’t irritate my eyes, and it’s waterproof without making my lashes crunchy or being impossible to take off. One of my all-time favorite mascaras is the Covergirl Lash Blast Volume Waterproof because it holds up to my watery eyes, the hot weather, and holds my curl all day. However, trying to take that mascara off is like pulling teeth. No cleanser seems to be able to get it off completely in one go, it makes my lashes crispy, and if I wear it too many days in a row, my lashes start to break off. If, like me, you love the pros of Lash Blast Volume, but hate the cons, I highly recommend you try the Avon True Color Super Extend Nourishing Mascara.
While this Avon mascara is primarily aimed at lengthening the lashes, it also provides volume. It doesn’t smudge or flake, but it’s easy to remove with a bit of cleansing oil or even a micellar water. Avon doesn’t label this as a waterproof mascara, but in my opinion, it might as well be. It holds my curl all day without making my lashes dry and crunchy, and it doesn’t smudge or bleed at all, not even at the corners of eyes where they’re the most watery. I’m truly amazed at how well this holds up because almost every mascara that isn’t waterproof leaves me with little black smudges on the outer corner.
This mascara doesn’t irritate my eyes at all either. I’ll confess that my ‘bad beauty habit’ is sleeping in my eye makeup, which feels like I’m doing myself a favor at night because it means I get to go to bed sooner, but not so much in the morning when my eyes are dry, itchy, and red from getting little flakes of mascara in my eyes all night. I’ve slept in the Avon True Color Super Extend Nourishing Mascara a few times now (for science! Kind of. Not really. I just wanted to go to sleep.), and even having slept in it, my eyes still aren’t irritated. My eyes can be quite sensitive to mascara, so the fact that this can make my bad habit less bothersome is a definite plus for me. Granted, it would be better if I stopped sleeping in my eye makeup all together, but… nope.
In the first impression I posted on Instagram, I mentioned that I wasn’t in love with the brush right away. We’ve overcome our differences, though I will say I still wish the bristles were a little bit thinner. The other concern I had about the brush was the tip, which gathers product. I figured out that this is actually useful for getting product onto the lashes at the outer corners, so I’ve come to enjoy that feature. It reminds me a little bit of Benefit’s They’re Real! mascara, but without the spiky ball of death. Now that I’ve settled my differences with the brush, I actually don’t feel like there are any major downsides to this mascara. The one little thing that does bother me is how wet the mascara is. It’s not extremely wet, but it’s wet enough that if I make the mistake of blinking right after I apply it, it will transfer a tiny bit below my eye. If you know you don’t like rubber bristle wands or prefer a drier formula, you may not like this mascara. Additionally, if you like really intense volume a la Too Faced Better Than Sex or Yves Saint Laurent Effet Faux Cils, this may not satisfy you. It’s not a dramatic mascara, so if that’s what you’re looking for, this isn’t it.
